Mason highlights scholarships for women

https://ift.tt/35jg5Ip

GURNEE – State Rep. Joyce Mason, D-Gurnee, is joining her colleagues in the Conference of Women Legislators of the Illinois General Assembly in announcing academic scholarships for women who are at least 25 years old.

“Too often, the cost of tuition prevents people from attending college or leaves them straddled with debt for years after graduation,” Mason said in a news release. “Financial assistance in the form of scholarships can make a big difference in the overall cost of going to school, but it can be difficult for older students to secure that assistance when they’re forced to compete with large pools of younger applicants.”

The Conference of Women Legislators of the Illinois General Assembly is a bipartisan nonprofit organization of Illinois state senators and representatives. The conference is offering 10 scholarships of $2,500 each to women who are 25 or older and enrolled at an accredited Illinois college or university. Applications are due on or before May 1. https://ift.tt/3f59CFq

To support the SIUE students, staff and faculty facing food insecurity during the COVID-19 pandemic, state Rep. Katie Stuart (D-Edwardsville) is co-hosting a virtual food drive to benefit the Cougar Cupboard.

“The COVID-19 health crisis has caused many obstacles for residents in the Metro East, including uncertainty with employment and finances for some families,” Stuart said. “SIUE is one of the largest employers in our region and since school has been closed for the foreseeable future there are students, staff and faculty in need of extra support during this time.”

Stuart is co-hosting a virtual food drive through the end of May to benefit the Cougar Cupboard, a campus food pantry that provides food support for students, staff and faculty. To promote social distancing and contactless donations, residents wishing to donate can do so by visiting https://yougivegoods.com/cougarcupboard. The Cougar Cupboard is fully supported by donations and is preparing emergency boxes for students, staff and faculty facing hardship during the COVID-19 health crisis.

“This virtual food drive will help ease the burden for residents that are struggling to make ends meet and feed themselves and their families during this time,” Stuart said. “During this unprecedented time, it is important that we continue supporting each other because we are all in this together, so I am asking residents that are able to consider supporting the Cougar Cupboard through my virtual food drive.”

Rep. Bristow Denounces Price Gouging and Scams Related to COVID-19 Outbreak | RiverBender.com

https://ift.tt/2KF5r5q

ALTON – In order to help protect Illinois residents against fraud and scams during this vulnerable time, state Rep. Monica Bristow, D-Alton, is warning residents about common scams emerging during the COVID-19 outbreak. The Illinois Attorney General’s Office has been warning against new scams that have become common during the public health crisis.

“It’s appalling that there are people trying to take advantage of others during a time of increased stress and anxiety for many,” said Bristow. “It is essential that individuals stay informed about what information is real and what false information may be someone trying to take advantage of your finances.”

According to Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul, individuals should avoid answering text messages, phone calls, or emails that request people provide financial information or click a link to learn more about the federal CARES Act that includes stimulus information. These links prompt people to share their private information like their social security number, bank account numbers, or credit card numbers. Clicking links can also download dangerous malware to the phone or computer, compromising the security of files, photos, and other documents on the device. Those concerned about their stimulus check should visit www.IRS.gov for more information. To learn more about how to avoid fraud or scams, visit the Illinois Attorney General’s website at https://illinoisattorneygeneral.gov.

Price gouging has also emerged as an obstacle for consumers during the COVID-19 outbreak. Price gouging will typically affect the price of items related to the pandemic such as hand sanitizer, face masks, and disinfectant supplies. Bristow is encouraging anyone that suspects individuals or businesses of price gouging to file a report with the Illinois Attorney General’s office. To report price gouging or fraud related to COVID-19 online, fill out the consumer complaint submission form at https://ccformsubmission.ilattorneygeneral.net/.

“These scams and frauds that put Illinois residents at risk will not be tolerated,” said Bristow. “I encourage everyone to be vigilant and also check in on your loved ones and seniors to ensure they avoid falling victim to scams or price gouging during this time.”

Carol and Aaron Ammons: Daughter subject of mailed death threat

Carol and Aaron Ammons: Daughter subject of mailed death threat

Posted: / Updated:

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — The daughter of Champaign County Clerk Aaron Ammons and State Representative Carol Ammons was the subject of a mailed death threat, according to a joint statement from the two Thursday afternoon.

According to the Ammons’ statement, a Champaign County Clerk employee gathered the department’s mail around 9:30 a.m. Monday morning, finding a “hand-written letter that contained a death threat directed to their daughter, Titianna Ammons.”

Included in the Ammons’ joint statement was the following message, which they said left grammatical and spelling errors intact in order to “reflect the actual content of the letter”:

WE ARE TRIED OF THE AMMONS FAMILY CONTROLLING ATTITUDE. YOU ARE A DISGRACE TO CHAMPAIGN COUNTY IF YOU ARE CHAIR OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY FOR CHAMPAIGN COUNTY. YOU WILL HAVE LESS MEMBERS IN YOUR FAMILY. WE ARE WATCHING TITIANNA DAILY SCHEDULE. IF YOU ARE ELECTED TITIANNA WILL DIE SOON.”

Police were notified shortly after the letter was found Monday morning.

“In the past Carol and I have dealt with threats directed towards us, but it is reprehensible that an individual would threaten the life of our daughter,” Aaron Ammons said in Thursday’s release. “The author of the letter has caused undue stress and anxiety to our family as well as the dedicated employees that work in our offices.  While we are taking this threat very seriously, we will not be bullied or intimidated by whomever is behind this. Titianna is strong, focused, and resilient in the face of all of the challenges she’s facing and she/we will NOT be moved!”

An investigation by the Champaign County Sheriff’s office remains ongoing.

Those with tips are asked to call the office at 217-384-1204.

“We will not speculate on the individual’s motives or plans, but we are taking this threat seriously and we’re asking for the public’s assistance in identifying the author,” the statement Thursday read. “We know some people don’t particularly like us and are not happy about the positions we hold in this community, but this should cross the line in everyone’s book.”

Opinion | Abe Scarr and Rep. Katie Stuart: Online retailers must do more to combat price gouging

https://ift.tt/2Kb7m1k

Because the biggest companies weren’t doing enough to combat price gouging, 18 Illinois state legislators joined a bipartisan group of nearly 350 lawmakers from 45 states in sending a letter to the CEOs of Amazon, eBay, Craigslist, Facebook and Walmart calling on them to put more proactive measures in place to prevent price gouging before it happens. A similar letter was sent last week from 33 attorneys general, including Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul.

Specifically, the letter urged the companies to do three things: set policies and enforce restrictions on unconscionable price gouging during emergencies; trigger price gouging protections prior to an explicit emergency declaration, as prices often begin to increase before this; and create and maintain a “Fair Pricing Page/Portal” on their websites where consumers can easily report price gouging.

While we wait for online retailers to implement these policies, consumers can and should still take action if they see price gouging or have already purchased products with inflated prices. First, you should report any price gouging to the Illinois Attorney General’s office by filling out this form.

How do you know when something is price gouging, you might ask? Well, if you’re suspicious that a product you see online is higher than it should be, you can protect yourself by following these steps:

• Use a price tracking tool like CamelCamelCamel or Keepa to see if the price increased recently.
