OTTAWA, IL – State Rep. Lance Yednock, D-Ottawa, is highlighting mental health resources available and encouraging residents to care for their mental health as the COVID-19 crisis presents new challenges.

“These unprecedented times have been difficult for essential workers, medical professionals, first responders, their families, and everyone in between,” said Yednock. “If the last few weeks have taught us anything, it’s how important it is for each of us to take charge of our own health. That extends to our mental health just as equally as it applies to our physical health.”

The Illinois Department of Human Services’ Mental Health Division has launched a free-of-charge emotional support text line, Call4Calm, for Illinois residents experiencing stress and mental health issues related to COVID-19.Individuals who would like to speak with a mental health professional can text “TALK” to 552020. Call4Calm is free to use, and individuals will remain anonymous.

Once aresident sends a text to the hotline, within 24 hours they will receive a call from a counselor employed by a local community mental health center to provide support.Individuals can also text552020, with key words such as “unemployment” or “food” or “shelter” and they will receive information on how to navigate and access support and services. The Illinois Department of Public Health has alsoannounced that individuals looking to receive the latest updates and information on COVID-19 can opt-in to their text alert system by texting “COVID” to 312-500-3836.
