Democrat state Rep. Carol Sente of Vernon Hills is encouraging local students to apply for her Summer Legislative Internship Program, which provides firsthand experience with state government and constituent service. Interns work in her full-time constituent service office at the Laschen Community Center, 294 Evergreen Drive, Vernon Hills. Responsibilities include researching and writing about legislation, learning about local and state issues, assisting with community outreach projects and events, and developing a detailed understanding of office communications and operations. The internship lasts from June through August, is unpaid, and offers flexible work hours. Applicants should send a cover letter and resume to RepSente@gmail.com or a paper version to the office.

ALTON – To continue his fight against burdensome property taxes in the state of Illinois, state Rep. Dan Beiser, D-Alton, introduced House Bill 277 which would allow more seniors to qualify for exemptions on property taxes.

“Our seniors are being hit from all ends with a rising cost of living, care expenses increasing, all while property taxes continue to go up each year,” Beiser said. “It’s unfair to ask citizens who are living on a fixed income or a pension to continually pay more in property taxes, despite the value of their property going down, which is often the case. This legislation would help take some of the weight off of our seniors by allowing more access to property tax exemption.”

HB 277 would increase the limit of the Senior Citizens Assessment Freeze Homestead Exemption from $55,000 to $75,000, as long as the person is 65 years or older. By expanding the income limit, it would allow more seniors to qualify for the exemption. This bill continues an already established effort by Beiser to hold the line on property taxes for seniors, as well as for working families.

“During my time as state representative, I have supported property taxes freezes nearly 20 times for our state, and worked on legislation to provide more exemptions for seniors and disabled veterans,” Beiser said. “By letting residents keep more money in their pockets or to be spent locally, we can help contribute to and grow our local economy.”

ALTON, Ill. – State Rep. Dan Beiser, D-Alton, is sharing his plan to encourage economic development and a more business friendly environment for downstate Illinois, and continuing his call for a full and balanced state budget.

“In order to help our economy grow, we need to be making reforms and putting into place practices that make our state friendlier to businesses,” Beiser said. “Obviously, a huge part of this, and what remains my number one priority is getting a balanced budget that does not hurt our most vulnerable citizens or drive down wages for working middle-class families.”

Beiser pointed to several tax initiatives that would provide relief for small businesses, including a cut in the tax placed on small and medium sized businesses, while also asking the largest companies to pay their fair share. Many of the largest corporations in Illinois pay no income tax, putting the real burden on those small and medium-sized employers, who are already at a competitive disadvantage against big business. A cut in taxes placed on businesses could benefit all businesses throughout Illinois and would allow them to invest more on creating new jobs, while also ensuring that all businesses pay something.

“In the 111^th district, we have a lot of good, hard-working people who have lost their jobs due to unfair trade deals that have shipped American jobs overseas,” Beiser said. “I am supporting new tax policies that would end any tax breaks or incentives for companies that outsource jobs. I believe that by reforming our tax policy, and providing businesses with a good foundation to grow in, that we can grow jobs and see our local economy prosper.”
