Rep. Yednock acts to raise awareness of veteran suicide

http://bit.ly/2ZUGCZB

SPRINGFIELD — To bring attention to the recent epidemic of suicide among veterans, state Rep. Lance Yednock, D-Ottawa, is sponsoring a resolution that supports veterans who may be facing mental illness. It also requests the state create a memorial for veterans who have been lost due to suicide.

“As the son of a United States Marine, I know that the physical and mental scars suffered abroad by our bravest citizens are often brought back home and can last forever,” Yednock said.

“That’s why we need to make it clear to our veterans that we support them in many ways, not just with words, but with action. As a state, we should both honor our fallen heroes and do everything we can to support future and current veterans who may face mental illness by providing the services and support that they deserve.”

Many veterans returning from active duty experience physical and psychological ailments. In 2016, the suicide rate for veterans was 1.5 times greater than non-veterans and accounted for 14 percent of all adult suicide deaths in the U.S, even though only 8 percent of the population has served in the military. In 2016, 162 veterans died by suicide in Illinois.

House Resolution 168 states support for veterans currently struggling with mental illness and suicidal thoughts and pays tribute to veterans who have lost their lives to suicide. HR 168 encourages the state of Illinois to create a memorial for veterans who have died of suicide to be included at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, where other war memorials commemorate Illinois’ veterans.

“It’s important to establish a memorial to honor our veterans who have been lost to suicide, because they are still very much casualties of war,” Yednock said.

“By having a physical memorial erected here in Illinois, we not only pay tribute to them, but future generations can learn about one of the many real world consequences of military intervention abroad. As state representative, I am committed to supporting our veterans and ensuring that they have available access to the quality services and care that they need.”

State Rep. Joyce Mason to host diaper drive

http://bit.ly/2UX28ht

GURNEE – State Rep. Joyce Mason, D-Gurnee, is hosting a diaper drive that will lead up to Mother’s Day, concluding on May 11.

All diapers collected will be donated to Twice As Nice Mother & Child, a nonprofit organization that distributes more than a quarter million diapers each year to families in need throughout Lake County.

“Diapers are imperative to ensuring families have ample opportunity to succeed in life. Oftentimes, quality child care facilities will not accept a child into their program if that child will not be brought with his or her own supply of diapers,” Mason said in a news release. “This can lead to many already struggling parents being unable to find steady, secure employment because they are lacking viable child care options.”

Residents interested in participating in the drive can bring diapers to Mason’s office at 36100 Brookside Drive in Gurnee during regular business hours. To find an alternative time or location to donate, contact Mason’s constituent service office at 847-485-9986 or email info@repjoycemason.com.

“I am a single mother myself. I understand that there are countless, complex issues facing families today, but being forced to choose between buying diapers or buying baby formula should not be one of them,” Mason said in the release. “Children deserve to grow up in healthy, nurturing environments, and parents deserve to have the ability to give that to them.”

Rachelle Crowe, D-Glen Carbon, stand with items donated by local residents for Oasis Women’s Shelter and Coordinated Youth and Human Services. The legislators collected donation items for the two organizations during the month of March.ALTON, Ill. – To help support local social services that serve those in need, state Rep. Monica Bristow, D-Alton, joined state Rep. Katie Stuart, D-Edwardsville, and state Sen. Rachelle Crowe, D-Glen Carbon, to hold a supply drive for Oasis Women’s Shelter in Alton and Coordinated Youth and Human Services in Granite City.

“I am so thankful to all of the residents who took time out of their busy lives to stop by my office and donate items to those who are in need,” said Bristow. “Oasis Women’s Shelter and Coordinated Youth and Human Services are two organizations that dedicate so much time to caring for women and children in our area. Our local social services are so important to those at difficult times in their lives, and I’m happy that so many could help provide supplies to two deserving organizations.”

To help celebrate Women’s History Month, the legislators gathered supplies to donate to local organizations that serve women and children in need. As a member of the Human Services committee, Bristow serves as a strong voice for social services and their needs in the Metro East. Together with Stuart and Crowe, the legislators have sponsored bills that protect the tools and funding for local services.

“The Oasis Women’s Center in Alton provides comfort to the Metro East’s most vulnerable women and children, and it’s in desperate need of donations,” said Crowe. “It’s so important that we stand together against domestic abuse and neglect. If you were unable to donate, consider spending an hour or two volunteering. My family has spent decades giving back to this organization, so I was delighted to host this drive.”

State Rep. John Connor, D-Lockport, recently visited MorningStar Mission in Joliet to deliver donations from the clothing drive he hosted earlier in December with state Rep. Larry Walsh Jr., D-Joliet.

“MorningStar Mission is a wonderful organization that does important work in our community,” Connor said in a news release. “The winter months can be especially difficult for those in need, and I hope that the donations from our clothing drive can help make a difference.”

MorningStar Mission is an organization that offers programs for families, young men and at-risk youth. The organization also provides thousands of food baskets and gifts to families and individuals in need during the holiday season and gives school supplies to more than 300 children at the beginning of each school year.

“Helping those in need is important during the holiday season, but is necessary year-round,” Connor said. “I’m grateful for everyone who generously donated, and I encourage residents to visit MorningStar Mission’s website to find information.”

Stuart encourages food pantry donations

https://ift.tt/2SSmQtn

State Rep. Katie Stuart (D-Edwardsville) attended the annual Christmas luncheon of the Steelworkers Organization of Active Retirees on Monday to discuss the canned food drive and other accomplishments of the organization this past year.

“This chapter of SOAR is one of the most active in the nation and has done so much to help steelworkers and local community organizations here in the Metro East, like TWIGS, Faith in Action, and others, through winter clothing drives and various fundraisers. Last year, they stepped up to help provide winter clothing to laid-off steelworkers in the area,” Stuart said. “This year, now that many of the steelworkers have rejoined the workforce at the mill, they are using their resources to help the entire community through a canned food drive.”

Stuart will collect canned and nonperishable food items from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through Dec. 20 at her constituent services office, 2105 Vandalia St., Unit 16, in Collinsville. She will also collect donations from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18, at her Holiday Open House, also at her local office.

“I am proud to support our active and retired steelworkers in any way I can, whether through legislation to help promote buying local and American-made goods, or through canned food collections for them to give back and donate to local food pantries,” Stuart added. “I encourage everyone to join local steelworkers and me to donate nonperishable goods and help those in need this holiday season.”

“It is our privilege to honor the service of veterans and their families,” said Walsh. “We will once again welcome veterans and their families to a free breakfast at the Stone City VFW Post 2199, which provides a wonderful breakfast and celebration atmosphere.”

So many of our veterans are leaders in their communities. We look forward to greeting old and new friends at the Veteran Appreciation Breakfast.”

"I applaud Rep. Walsh for again taking the lead in organizing this Veterans Appreciation Breakfast, a celebration of the patriotism of our veterans and the gratitude of us legislators," said State Sen. Pat McGuire, 43rd District.
