Rep. Didech asks neighbors for legislative ideas

https://ift.tt/37Zl0kV

Looking ahead to the 102nd General Assembly, state Rep. Dan Didech, (D-Buffalo Grove) is encouraging constituents to submit their ideas for legislation that could help address local issues.

“Many of the best ideas for legislation come from the community, and Springfield needs fresh ideas now more than ever,” Didech said. “This past year has brought unprecedented and new challenges for the people of Illinois due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so I want to hear directly from our community on how state government can be more effective for them as we work to rebuild.”

Didech serves as state representative for the 59th House District, which includes all or parts of Buffalo Grove, Gurnee, Lincolnshire, Mundelein, Northbrook, Park City, Vernon Hills, Waukegan and Wheeling.

Throughout the year, Didech traditionally spends time going door-to-door and holding events to hear directly from constituents on the issues they care about. However, since the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has greatly reduced opportunities for safe in-person conversations, Didech is encouraging neighbors to share their thoughts electronically or over the phone.

“The pandemic has changed so much for so many, but what remains is my dedication to our community and my promise that I’ll always prioritize the needs of our families,” Didech said.

“The need for greater access to affordable health care, property tax relief, and a more transparent government are among my top priorities for the upcoming legislative session.”

Residents of Didech’s district are invited to email him at info@repdidech.com with ideas, comments, questions, thoughts, or concerns.

Didech can also be reached via Facebook at www.Facebook.com/RepDidech or by calling his district office at (847) 478-9909.

Legal Group to Help Illinoisans Clear Marijuana Convictions

https://ift.tt/39sxAdd

A new legal group will help people with marijuana convictions in Illinois clear their records.

New Leaf Illinois launched earlier this month as part of the state’s law legalizing recreational cannabis.

Under the law, people with low-level marijuana convictions can have their records expunged and state officials estimate hundreds of thousands of people are eligible. New Leaf, a state-sponsored program, will help people do that.

Backers say it’s a critical step in undoing the damage done by a half-century of the war on drugs, which has particularly affected minorities, who were likely to be arrested and prosecuted for marijuana offenses.

The help is available statewide to “make sure that there was going to be that same level of advocacy for people statewide to be able to be freed of the collateral consequences of cannabis convictions,” said Rep. Jehan Gordon-Booth, a Peoria Democrat who helped write the law, according to WCIA-TV.

Sales of legal marijuana in Illinois began earlier this year.

Oswego Democrat In Favor of Legislation Allowing Illinois House to Meet Remotely

https://ift.tt/37bK1HY

Oswego Democratic State Representative Stephanie Kifowit says she understands the reasoning behind the cancellation of the Fall Veto session. Lawmakers in Illinois normally meet in November and December to deal with vetoed legislation. The session was called off by party leaders because of Illinois’ growing number of COVID-19 positive cases.

Local government bodies can meet remotely during the pandemic via video conferencing, but the Illinois House cannot.

Kifowit says she is in favor allowing the Illinois House to meet remotely.

The pandemic has cut into other legislative sessions even though there is no shortage of work to be done in Springfield. Namely, lawmakers are facing a massive budget deficit because of the COVID-19 pandemic. A proposal to allow a graduated income tax which proponents said would help fill the gap was rejected by Illinois voters by no small margin.

Kifowit has put her name forward as a contender for Illinois House Speaker. Current House Speaker Michael Madigan is embroiled in an alleged bribery scheme involving utility giant ComEd.

State Rep.-Elect Suzanne Ness undecided on whether to support Madigan for speaker role

https://ift.tt/330eur2

Democrat Suzanne Ness, who recently won her bid against incumbent state Rep. Allen Skillicorn to represent District 66 in Springfield, said Thursday she remains undecided on whether she will vote for state Rep. Michael Madigan to continue in the Speaker of the House role he has held for decades.

Her undecided position on the speaker came as more statehouse Democrats reportedly dropped their support of Madigan getting another term in the leadership position after indictments of his close associate and others in a ComEd utility bribery scheme were made public Wednesday.

"I have time to think about it, and so I’m giving myself the benefit of time," Ness told the Northwest Herald. "Future indictments, if something comes out specifically against the Speaker, that might influence me."

Ness’ statehouse campaign received more than $600,000 in transfers from political organizations, including some controlled by Madigan, who is also the head of the Illinois Democratic Party, according to Ness and the most recent quarterly campaign finance report to the state.

Skillicorn had criticized those financial contributions during the campaign and had also publicly called for Madigan’s resignation.

Ness was the sole Democrat to notch a victory in any of the five statehouse races for districts that include parts of McHenry County. District 66 runs from Crystal Lake and Lakewood in the north through Lake in the Hills, Huntley and Algonquin into Kane County, where it also includes Gilberts, Sleepy Hollow and West Dundee.

"If not Speaker Madigan, then who? At least we know who he is," Ness said. "… I haven’t made up my mind."

Stuart highlights Affordable Care Act enrollment

https://ift.tt/3fbka6g

State Rep. Katie Stuart (D-Edwardsville) is highlighting the open enrollment period for residents to shop the Affordable Care Act Health Insurance Marketplace for coverage. The open enrollment period is open now through Dec. 15 to shop for healthcare coverage for 2021.

“The open enrollment period is an opportunity for individuals to get healthcare coverage that has been provided at the federal level for Illinois residents,” Stuart said. “As many people have lost jobs and consequently healthcare coverage due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the open enrollment period is the time to make sure that you have health insurance that is right for you and your family for the coming year.”

During open enrollment, individuals lacking healthcare coverage or wanting to change their current healthcare plan can shop different plan options through the marketplace. Additionally, Stuart wants residents to know that if they currently have a healthcare plan through the ACA marketplace, they are automatically enrolled in their current plan for the coming year. For more information about open enrollment and shopping, the ACA marketplace can be found here as part of the Illinois Get Covered program.

“I encourage residents to go to Illinois Get Covered to get up-to-date information regarding healthcare plans and for any questions that they have regarding open enrollment,” Stuart said. “By checking a quick provided checklist and information available, they can help determine if they want to get healthcare coverage through the ACA marketplace and what plans may suit their best needs.”

Vella defeats Cabello in 68th District race after last votes are counted

https://ift.tt/2Uz4RL9

ROCKFORD (WREX) — Democratic challenger Dave Vella has won the race for the 68th District over incumbent Republican John Cabello by just 239 votes.

Winnebago County added 2,211 votes Tuesday, while Rockford added 197 to its count on the final day votes could be counted.

The total vote count is 26,770 (50.22%) to 26,531 (49.78%) in favor of Vella.

The election night spread showed Cabello with an 812 vote lead, but new votes from Rockford, and now Winnebago Co., since election night have favored Vella.

We have been told by both the Winnebago County Clerk and the Rockford Board of Elections that the final count is now official.

13 News spoke with Cabello Tuesday afternoon and he told us that he will ask for a recount. We are also reaching out to Vella for comment on his apparent victory.

The final vote tally was required before 5 p.m. Tuesday, when the race must officially be certified.

You can view the vote totals from both municipalities here.

Cabello lead shrinks in 68th House District race against Vella

https://ift.tt/3leCxJG

Spread narrows from 812 to 358, but final results won’t be known until Nov. 17 as mail-in ballots trickle in

The number of votes separating Republican incumbent state Rep. John Cabello and Democratic challenger Dave Vella shrank from 812 Tuesday night to 358 Wednesday after the city updated its unofficial election results.

Vella said he’s willing to wait until Nov. 17 to learn the winner of the race to be the Illinois state representative in the 68th District for the next two years.

Vella’s comments came the day after the election, after Winnebago County Clerk Lori Gummow announced that she would not update the county’s election results based on mail-in ballots until Nov. 17, the date by which she must certify the results.

The city added 2,966 votes on Wednesday, 1,284 of them in the 68th District.

With 50,778 votes tallied — some from the county’s election office and some from the city’s — Cabello led with 50.35% of the vote to Vella’s 49.65%, according to unofficial election results.

Yet to be seen is how many ballots will arrive at election offices in the coming days to be added to existing tallies.

This year saw record numbers of requests for vote-by-mail ballots in both the city and county. Of the nearly 45,000 ballots that were mailed to voters, election officials say about 8,000 of them remain unaccounted for. They could be in the mail, or they could go unused.

"I’m going to stay in this until every vote is counted, and we find out which of us won," said Vella, a Rockford resident.

"I know they haven’t counted all of the votes yet and that votes are still eligible to be counted as long as they are postmarked the day of the election. … I want the votes to be counted. If that’s how long it takes, then that’s how long it takes."

Election officials were unable to say how many unreturned ballots were mailed to voters who live in the 68th District. The city has about 3,700 ballots that could still come back and the county has about 4,300.

The city’s election office plans to update its election results periodically in the coming days before it, too, certifies its election results.

Cabello, of Machesney Park, did not respond to a call seeking comment Tuesday night.

He posted the following on his Facebook page Wednesday morning:

"What a night! Thank you to everyone who voted. We are cautiously optimistic that we will prevail after the mail in ballots are in. …

"I am humbled by your support. The corrupt gang tried to buy this district. Looks like they didn’t succeed."

Vella, 49, is a lawyer. Cabello, 49, is a police detective.

The district includes sections of northwest and east Rockford, Loves Park, Machesney Park and Cherry Valley.

In a preelection questionnaire, Cabello’s stressed a need to restore "fundamental principles government that is supposed to defend our rights as citizens which includes ’life and property.’

"My real concern is that the Democrat policies in this state that are put forward as a means toward the ’common good’ are in fact dangerous and irresponsible. … We can also root out the corruption. Speaker Mike Madigan and Gov. Pritzker are being investigated for wrongdoing. They have been funding my opponent with hundreds of thousands of dollars."

Vella is the grandson of longtime Rockford-area legislator Zeke Giorgi.

"My grandpa Zeke Giorgi told me something when I was young that really stuck with me. He said: ’Everyone is the same. We all want our families and our neighbors to have a good life. We just have different ideas on how to get there. If you keep that in mind, you can work with anyone," Vella responded to the questionnaire.

"I want to emulate this approach in my public service. Being a representative is more than complaining and casting blame. It’s about building a better community through your actions and setting an example for everyone to follow."
