Oswego Democratic State Representative Stephanie Kifowit says she understands the reasoning behind the cancellation of the Fall Veto session. Lawmakers in Illinois normally meet in November and December to deal with vetoed legislation. The session was called off by party leaders because of Illinois’ growing number of COVID-19 positive cases.

Local government bodies can meet remotely during the pandemic via video conferencing, but the Illinois House cannot.

Kifowit says she is in favor allowing the Illinois House to meet remotely.

The pandemic has cut into other legislative sessions even though there is no shortage of work to be done in Springfield. Namely, lawmakers are facing a massive budget deficit because of the COVID-19 pandemic. A proposal to allow a graduated income tax which proponents said would help fill the gap was rejected by Illinois voters by no small margin.

Kifowit has put her name forward as a contender for Illinois House Speaker. Current House Speaker Michael Madigan is embroiled in an alleged bribery scheme involving utility giant ComEd.
