As Southwestern Illinois College’s (SWIC) Sam Wolf Granite City Campus marks 40 years of serving the region with quality learning opportunities, state Rep. Jay Hoffman (D-Swansea) joined college leaders and local residents on Saturday, Sept. 30 for a community event in celebration.

“This campus is an integral part of our local economy and has sparked opportunity for countless students over the past four decades,” Hoffman said. “As we look ahead to another great 40 years, I’m thankful for the staff and teachers who continue to serve students and help people pursue their dreams.”

Saturday’s event included a special Sugar Art Garden display designed by Peggy Tucker, reflecting the style of glass artist Dale Chihuly. More than 30 local vendors participated in the event, which featured a car show, food trucks and activities for kids.

The Sam Wolf Granite City Campus offers unique programs within the SWIC network including culinary arts and food management, aviation maintenance technology and an industrial technology center. For more information, visit https://www.swic.edu/about/campuses/granite-city-campus/.

“We are prepared to help” – State Represenative Dave Vella addresses potential U-S shutdown impact

https://ift.tt/xrYy2cd

ILLINOIS — A looming government shutdown, causing uncertainty on capital hill will soon cause major concerns for workers in state of Illinois.

Over the last several weeks, lawmakers have been working to get a deal done, but according to new reports there are some positive traction that a bill could be pushed through before the October 1st deadline and keep the government open for another 30 days.

However, if a shutdown is to occur, local essential and non-essential workers in the stateline could see a potential strain and major deduction on their paychecks.

State Representative Dave Vella, who represents Illinois 68th District, explains some ongoing projects could see prolonged.

“This is the basic thing they are supposed to do is give us a budget,” Vella expressed.

“Not too long ago I met with the farm bureau and without inspector’s farmers could have issues with cattle, corn and hogs because no one will inspect them or without the EPA okaying infrastructure projects, those infrastructure projects might slow down and stop.”

Now, with the potential of federal funding coming to a brief halt, local leaders including Vella will soon find alternative ways to continue to support local organizations.

“We have always tried to have a rainy-day fund that we are very proud, but we will be relying on our leadership to point us in the direction of what is the best way to do this.”

“Federal government is a huge contributor because they have a lot of money – but we will do what we can do, and we are hoping that they will come to their senses and do the job that we sent them there to do.”

A final decision on the spending deadline is Saturday, September 30th at midnight.

Scherer files bill to give Dennis Lab students their summer back, but at a cost

https://ift.tt/03USswT

DECATUR, Ill. (NEXSTAR) — A Decatur lawmaker is trying to make sure students from Dennis Lab Schools get their full summer vacation.

Dennis Lab students started the school year two weeks late. The two Dennis Lab buildings in Decatur were found to be structurally unsafe this past summer. The district set up modular classrooms for students, but they were not ready by the official start of the school year.

Since they started two weeks late, the students are also scheduled to go two weeks longer in this summer.

Rep. Sue Scherer (D-Decatur) filed a bill to try and change that. Her bill would allow Decatur Public Schools to extend up to 25 school days for Dennis lab students by two hours. In exchange, the Dennis Lab students could end their school year at the same time as the rest of the district.

"However many days it takes to make up those maybe 10 last days of school, and then that way, their last day would be the same as everyone else’s," Scherer said. ‘And in so many ways, I think that would be a much better solution."

Scherer said Decatur Public School Superintendent Dr. Rochelle Clark brought her the idea. She wants to call the bill in October when lawmakers return to Springfield for their Fall veto session.

"We talked at length, the teachers union is on board with this, and the security people are on board their union," Scherer said. "So everybody is on board with my idea, which came not from me, but from the superintendent."
