PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — Bringing joy during the holidays to children in foster care or with incarcerated parents.

That’s the goal of an event hosted by State Rep. Jehan Gordon-Booth.

A Mother’s Wish is held Dec. 20 every year, which marks the day Gordon-Booth’s mother died from a massive heart attack.

This is the fifth year for the event, which includes gifts, games, karaoke, food and more.

Gordon-Booth said not every child has the opporunity to be with their biological family at this time of year, which can be incredibly difficult.

She said she created this event to help her through her grief and channel something positive.

Illinois lawmakers congregate in Rockford to preview 2024 state initiatives

https://ift.tt/pKW4V9m

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — State lawmakers were in Rockford on Monday as part of an effort to explain to local communities what they can expect from Springfield in the coming year.

The luncheon, which took place at Cliffbreakers, at 700 W Riverside Blvd, was hosted by the Northern Illinois Council of Governments.

Sen. Steve Stadelman (D-Rockford) was just one of seven state legislators on a panel giving over 200 local government leaders a glimpse into the coming year, with budgeting, transportation, and new jobs being a few of the topics covered.

"I’m optimistic about our community. We’ve had some really good things happen in the past six months to year and better things are in store for the future. So I think people need to be optimistic in our community," Stadelman said. "There’s too much negativity at times in Rockford and the state of Illinois, and we’re having some really good announcements happening. So I think I’m primed for a really good 2024 and I want the message here that good things are happening in the Rockford area and people need to believe that that their days are ahead."

Another panel speaker, Rep. John Cabello (R-Machesney Park) emphasized the importance of state government working with local government.

"We need to make sure that we tell the people exactly what’s going on, how it’s going on, not sugarcoat. Just be direct," he said.

Rockford Mayor Tom McNamara said he believes transparency is needed to accomplish the New Year goals.

"Here at the City of Rockford level, I think we are looking forward to a lot of work being done. We have the largest capital improvement plan in our city’s history that’s going to be hitting the streets this summer. We have the largest water and infrastructure program hitting the streets this summer. You have a lot of economic development projects in the pipeline that we need to get moving and get completed. So I think we are going to be incredibly busy," McNamara said.

Scherer backs measure to allow expansion of Springfield High School | WICS

https://ift.tt/XZK54b6

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WICS) — State Representative Sue Scherer (D-Decatur) is helping Springfield High School grow by supporting legislation to allow the school district to acquire vacant lots key to the school’s expansion.

Besides these two small parcels of land, the details and minutia of the expansion have already been settled,” said Scherer. “The more quickly we act, the sooner we can build the 21st Century learning center that our kids need and deserve.

Scherer’s bill will continue to move the renovation process at Springfield High School forward by facilitating discussions that will allow the district to acquire the vacant properties needed to complete the school’s expansion.

The $126 million renovation will bring updates to the school such as air conditioning and expanded facilities, including academic and athletic facilities.

In addition, the school will be able to support a larger population of students. Construction is slated to begin in 2024.

The bill passed through both legislative chambers with strong bipartisan support.

For years, local families have asked for these basic improvements to their high school,” said Scherer. “I am excited to see the next step in bringing the district’s community’s goals of renovation to fruition.

City leaders serve breakfast to those who’ve served – CIProud.com

https://ift.tt/u70Xj3F

PEORIA Ill. (WMBD) — State Representative Jehan Gordon-Booth hosted her 13th Annual Veterans Appreciation Breakfast Saturday morning in Peoria.

Peoria Mayor Rita Ali, Police Chief Eric Echevarria, Fire Chief Shawn Sollberger, and Peoria County Sheriff Chris Watkins, along with others, all volunteered their time to come out and help serve the vets breakfast.

Gordon-Booth said serving the brave men and women who’ve fought for the country’s freedom is the least she can do.

“It’s about the love that they have for the veterans in our community that they would get up on a Saturday morning and choose to be here,” said Gordon-Booth. “Seeing the mayor, the chief, fire and police, and many of their elected officials, I think it should let them know how important they are to them.”

They also gave out 50 bags of groceries to the veterans and their families.
