CREVE COEUR, Ill. (WMBD) — Two schools in Creve Coeur had a guest appearance on Wednesday.

State Rep. Sharon Chung, who represents the 91st district, which stretches from Peoria to Bloomington, spoke to staff and students at LaSalle Elementary School and Parkview Middle School to get an inside look at what goes on in the schools.

While Creve Coeur isn’t in Chung’s constituent map, she still believes an experience like this is vital to the greater good of education.

"We have very different communities all throughout central Illinois with very different needs, very different populations," Chung said. "For me, I just wanted to be able to get a sense of what’s going on here, what their needs are. Then again, that’s how I’m able to most effectively be able to advocate for them down here, down in Springfield."

Chung got to see what the library looks like, visit classrooms and meet teachers. She also got to see what students were going to have for lunch that day, which was chicken teriyaki, rice, corn, an orange and a vanilla pudding for dessert.

Steve Johnson, superintendent of Creve Coeur School District 76, invited Rep. Chung out to their schools to have her see what they do day-to-day.

"It’s one thing to talk about matters that we all deal with in public schools, but it’s another thing to invite folks to come in and actually see what our students are like, what our classrooms are like, what our teachers are like, what our administration’s like and what our schools are actually like."

Johnson added that he’s hopeful for a continued discussion with local representatives about what can have a positive impact for public schools in the area.
