Successes from session
Democrat Sharon Chung announces her re-election to run in the race for the 91st House District on Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2023, at Miller Park in Bloomington.
CLAY JACKSON, THE PANTAGRAPH
Chung, a second-year lawmaker, said she did "more navigating and steering" this session after "going along for the ride a little bit more last year." This included sponsoring bills that were "bigger lifts," such as the battery stewardship program, which awaits Pritzker’s signature to become law.
"It was a really great lesson in how to negotiate a bill and bring in all these people together," she said. "That was a really great experience, to be honest. I really am proud about that bill."
Disappointments from session
Chung was the chief House sponsor of legislation meant to shield farm families from the financial burden of estate taxes. However, the language did not make into the final revenue bill that passed in the waning hours of session.
"We had some really great conversations. And, yeah, ultimately, it wasn’t able to get into the budget," she acknowledged. "But I’m feeling hopeful.
"I’m not the type of person that sort of walks away from a fight when it’s something that I really believe in. So, this is something that I’ve really pledged to a lot of folks that I really do want to try and see what we can do to get it done. Hopefully next year."
